'THE SLIDEY...at Reestones place with the incredibly dangerous swings
in the background..which were eventually removed as anyone passing
had to duck for fear of being hit.People in the photo; me standing,
all the cooksons,Carolyn at the front, then michael, debbie and lindey
trying to push in...'

The problem with the swings that I presume fancythat is talking about was that as you swung out on one you would swing out into Studdon Walk footpath which was a main thoroughfare to and from the shops...Suzanne suggests thats why they were removed which is interesting...but why so the slide?...note also the flats on stilts to the right where the other row of shops was intended to be built underneath but never was...(I will up a photo of the flats soon)also in the background Kenton Bar Primary School is visible...tantalizingly, the pyry is just around the corner to the right of the flats on stilts and is not visible...
note also how in those days the sun used to shine and the sky was blue...
Happy days!
I'd date this photo around about 1973/4...

  1. I remember that slide being fitted in 1969, they dug a humongous hole for the concrete stairs which went down underground nearly as deep as the stairs were tall.

  2. When was my beloved "slidey" removed? How dare they!!!!.We were really lucky on Reestones Place as we had numerous play items. The swings, the slidey, the concrete table and chairs...further down the street and the metal "climbey frame".We were quite spoilt!Did other streets have a slide?.To make for a faster descent from the slide we used bread paper..the old waxed stuff... gave it a good rub and one could be plummeted so much faster to land on yet more concrete. To a totally different subject, as I thought I saw a blogg on KB dogs...but I cant find the bugger!Yes the Cooksons had a dog..a Black Labrador namely Roy.He used to hump all the kids.. and the family at the top of Reestones were the Dryborughs and the dad was also called Roy (who incidentally was a postman). So when the Cooksons were calling for Roy...well I'm surprised the posty didnt come running! does anyone remember Bob?, Yvonne and Yolandes dog?

    1. Dont know when they removed the slide, but they removed all the slides etc located round about the estate-probablt on health & safety ground I guess-compensation culture...the concrete table and chairs are still there and there is a photo of it I took on this blog...the climbing frame has gone and also on this blog is a photo of the scar left behind if you care to look for it...other streets did have mini parks like yours, notably Fawlee Green and Beal Green...now only scars remain...
2.Re dogs on the estate-check out the post:Friday, February 5, 2010 'Dogs on the Estate'-to find it type 'dogs on the estate' in the search box(white rectangular box with magnifying lass icon in top left of this blog page -to the right of the 'B') and you will go straight there...woof woof!
    3. Yvonne & Yolandes dog Roy:I remember him well, always lounging/sleeping outside their bungalow on Studdon Walk in the sun(In those days the sun shone and the sky was blue...)
Incidently Yvonne is a fan of this blog and has posted a comment on it somewhere-think it was on the 'nicknames' item!-search to find!

  4. We used to get the paper of white sliced bread. We called it butter paper for some reason. Rub the "butter paper" on the metallic slide surface and it somehow made it more slippery and a faster ride was had by all.

  5. master:I have mentioned elsewhere on the blog that horrible ruffians and bounders(no doubt from the bottom)used to get the ubiquitous tar(used to climb the pyry) and rub it on the surfaces of the slides, rendering them useless as slides and making them in fact,'sticks'...
