the ditch

the ditch has been mentioned here and there on the blog for example in the post'the ha-ha fence May 2010'...it ran alongside Hartburn Walk bungalows betwixt them and Kenton Bar school and continued further east to the bushes near St Cuthbert's school...but why was there a ditch?...what purpose did it provide, eh?...what was it all about?...the bit by the school has long gone, now levelled, but Im not sure about the bit going towards St Cuthberts...must go and check sometime...we used to try to dig tunnels along that bit for some reason I recall, but they always collapsed...hmmmm...

    The sole purpose of the ditch was to be a Ha Ha, i.e. to minimise the impact of the fence.

    I never thought it quite worked, as the ditch wasn't quite deep enough &/or the fence short enough. You could always see a foot of it even from Kenton Road.

    Now, there is a fort knox 10' fence to keep the scratters out

kenton bar football team 1974-75

Here is a photo I found during more extensive research in a library... I remember the football team played for the 'Bagnall Cup' and played 'derbys' v St Cuthbert’s and also v Mountfield, North Fawdon, Wyndham, Montague and Snow Street (we and everyone else always thrashed Snow Street at least 12-0-their home pitch was at an angle of 45 degrees...) Note the' flag pennants' which were inspired by the Leeds United strip from the 1973-74 season on the socks of some of the kids in the front row...these had the numbers of the players on. the 10 first team players are all wearing the blue top with yellow hoop:the' subs' are wearing... whatever! It looks like they must have won the Bagnall cup that year! Anyone recognise themselves or any of the players?... (The tecka is Mr Brownlaw, a true gentleman...)
